Understanding Pet-Friendly Plants
In order to feel secure knowing that an accidental nibble won’t harm your pets, lean toward houseplants are considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. Some popular varieties include the spider plant, ferns, calathea, and peperomia. These plants create a beautiful, healthier environment for both you and your pets.
Common Pet-Friendly Varieties
Let’s dive into some popular pet-safe houseplants that can brighten up your space:
1. Spider Plants
Care Tips: This easy-to-grow plant features beautiful arching leaves with green and white stripes. Spider plants enjoy indirect light and moderate watering, making them ideal for a variety of indoor environments.
2. Ferns
Care Tips: Known for their feathery fronds, ferns adds a touch of elegance to any home. Ferns love high humidity, so mist them regularly or place it in a humid area, like a bathroom. Keep their soil evenly moist. Popular fern varieties are the kangaroo paw, maidenhair fern, and lemon button fern.
3. Calathea
Care Tips: With vibrant patterns on its leaves, calathea (aka prayer plants) make a stunning focal point. They prefers bright, indirect light and consistent moisture, so water them regularly and avoid letting them dry out completely. Popular calathea plants are the makoyana, rattlesnake, and ornata.
4. Peperomia
Care Tips: These small, sturdy plants come in various shapes and colors, from trailing varieties to compact, upright plants. Peperomias thrive in bright, indirect light and can tolerate lower light if needed. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Peperomia obtusifolia and the string of turtles are my favorites!
Other pet-friendly plants include African violets, pilea peperomiodes, palms, hoyas, airplants, and fittonias. If your cat or dog tends to bite, nibble, or play with your plants leaves, definitely stay away from pothos, sansevierias (aka snake plants), ZZ plants, ficus and monstera, which are all considered toxic to animals.
